I first met Mabel when she was about 5 weeks old. I last saw her when she was 10 years old. Throughout our life together the bond between us got stronger, so much so that l only had to make a facial or eye movement and she knew exactly what l wanted.
As she was short, and l am 6 foot, l always looked down at her and saw big doleful eyes looking up, but at the same level as her she was really very pretty. Her backside was a joy to behold as she negotiated staircases.
We would lay together on the lawn, flat on our backs fast asleep in the sun until my wife called out that dinner was ready, then she always won the race to be first.
A real lady, with a pedigree as long as my arm, she would sit down when dogs came sniffing, but proved her heritage when we walked over the marshes and she would locate fowl.
Totally non racist, she would make a fuss of any friend l happened to meet in the street, indeed, Remi, a West Indian, once remarked she was the only one never to growl at him.
Leaving her actually hurt more than leaving the kids. I would be seeing them on a regular basis and over time they would get to understand. But how do you explain a divorce to a Bassett ?
Even after all these years ( 40 ) it still hurts to think about that situation.

I had once this type of friendship. It was my cat, who spent 17 years with me, she was the smartest cat you could imagine.
